Concept of a preclinical phase of Alzheimer disease

Alzheimer´s disease is a progressive and degenerative disease. It is estimated that 2-5% of people over 65 years of age and up to 20% of those over 85 years of age suffer from the disease. Figure 1 shows the NINCDS/ADRDA criteria for Alzheimer disease, and other criteria can be found in the reference list. Considering that the criteria specify that the memory impairment and other cognitive deficits ?begin slowly and gradually become more severe? it should hypothetically be possible that cognitive deficits are detectable before the diagnosis of Alzheimer disease is obtainable. From a conceptual point of view, due to the long preclinical phase of Alzheimer disease, there could be symptomatic and symptomatic phases of the disease preceding the diagnosis.
