There is a huge range of tests that measure cognitive performance, and they can be categorized according to the domain of cognition that they tap. First, there are a number of tests that assess global cognitive performance, the most popular and well-known test is Folstein?s Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). The MMSE is a 30-point scale measuring a variety of cognitive functions. Another method is to use specific tests to assess separate domains of cognitive functioning listed in figure 3. For example, block design is used to measure visuospatial skill, language can be measured using letter fluency tasks. Word recognition and face recognition are common tools used to assess episodic memory (remembering events, persons, faces etc). These tests can be used to detect cognitive deficits in order to e.g. diagnose AD, but are also of interest to investigate the course of cognitive decline in preclinical phases of the disease.
