The heterogeneous Etiology of MCI.

Katie Palmer

TTMed Dementia

Año: 2004

Categoría: Deterioro Cognitivo Leve

Recently, a conceptual framework was proposed for MCI. Within this framework they proposed that there are two steps that a physician can make to classify and determine MCI. First, to establish the presentation (subtype) of MCI. Second, to determine the possible etiology behind the MCI. For example, is the cognitive deficit likely to be due to vascular factors, or is it degenerative in etiology? It is thought, for example, that Amnestic MCI is most likely to have a neurodegenerative etiology, and thus progress to Alzheimer?s disease. There could be numerous aetiologies to consider in MCI, including other dementia syndromes, somatic disorders, psychiatric conditions etc, as shown in the figure (Figure 11). The evolution of MCI will be discussed in the next module, which will provide more insight into the etiology of MCI.
